This easy photoshop tutorial will explain how you get isolated colors in a B&W photograph..

Open a photograph and apply New Adjustment layer - Saturation by clicking on layer -> new adjustment layer -> hue/saturation

Enter -100 for the saturation value, to get a B&W picture.

Use your brush, and make sure you’ve got your black for the foreground

Go to layer pallete, and click on the color adjustment layer.

Start using your brush to get the effect you want…

That’s it, you’re done! Here’s what I come up with..

You missed the “add a layer mask step” that would leave some newbies confused.

  2. vicky Says:

He doesn’t need to write “add a layer mask”, because he’s written “add an adjustment layer”.

    In response to mathesonmd’s comment:

Adjustment layers always have a ‘reveal all’ layer mask applied to them when they are created, but I can see where you were coming from.

Yep, as mathesonmd said, it has indeed left some newbies confused. I still don’t understand what you mean by “Go to layer pallete, and click on the color adjustment layer.” =\

Nvmd. I realized what I was doing wrong. I spent 40 minutes figuring out my mistake but in the end it was worth it cuz I learnt something new. =)

okay, so this doesn’t make any sense.

    you forgot steps

The tutorial is fine. This is an incredibly easy effect. All you do is add the saturation adjustment layer, choose -100 for the saturation, and start to draw in black. Where you draw is where the color comes back. Simple.
