Framing is trickier discipline to master, and involves using strong secondary elements to surround the main subject and give it a natural frame. This works best when the framing elements are simple shapes in the foreground, which gives depth to the picture. If the frame is too complex or overpowering the scene will look cluttered. Symmetry is more important when using frames. You should leave an equal gap between the frame and the central focal point

Photography Tip: Composition Techniques: Symmetry VS Asymmetry

Whether or not you should shoot to create a symmetrical image is down to personal taste. Simple subjects can be given a new lease of life if captured with equal weight across a frame, but more complex elements that are not symmetrical can look to static. A good starting point is to place the main elements in the centre of the viewfinder and move the camera until a balance is achieved along the horizontal and vertical axis.

Photography Tip: Composition Techniques: Linear Content

Whatever subject you are shooting, you can be sure it will have a linear structure of some kind. Try to view the linear content as the strings that tie an image together. Use these to draw in the viewer’s eye your main subject and invoke a greater sense of scene. Vertical lines suggest solidarity and power, while horizontal lines suggest tranquility and diagonal lines energy and movement. Curved lines feel most natural and give a pleasingly organic appearance
