Studio Lighting Tip: Setting up Home Studio for Product Photography

However, nothing can replace the studio lighting needed for pro product shots, and these systems are very expensive and take up a lot of space.
To remedy this situation, Bowens has come up with a simple, cost-effective home studio system that makes it possible to take great product shots in small space. The table Top Studio kit packs away for storage, but is easy to set up to produce professional-quality images of small objects using just a camera and standard tripod.

The kit comprises three items: the cocoon and the two Bowens tri-lites. The cocoon is an ingenious box consisting of four sections of translucent plastic fastened with heavy duty zippers and Velcro. It provides a base, background and light diffuser for any object that will fit inside.

The Tri-Lites are more complex but just as ingenious. They are high-intensity fluorescent lamps that provides a bright, consistent light source ideally suited to digital photography. There’s no need for a flash connector, so almost any digital camera will do. Each lamp has three bulbs, which are mounted in a base with a standard screw-thread fitting. Adding a wide reflector and diffuser screen produces bright, even illumination.

The Tri-Lites are positioned on either side of the Cocoon and the camera points in through one of three apertures. If necessary, the other apertures can be covered with sheets of paper. The lamps produce light that is of a different color temperature to fluorescent lights, so it is essential to set the camera’s white balance before shooting.
